Bez Godson Shares His Disability Journey, Music, and the Meaning Behind “Blood Ties” on Innervision FM

Innervision FM recently welcomed independent musician, producer, and disability advocate Bez Godson for a powerful conversation about music, family, chronic pain, personal transformation, and the importance of accepting life after a disability.

Hosted by Johnnie J of Innervision Nonprofit and Innervision Records, the live interview gave listeners an opportunity to learn about the person behind the music and the experiences that inspired Bez’s song, “Blood Ties.”

From Door-to-Door Sales to Independent Music

Bez began the conversation by explaining the origin of his nickname. Before focusing seriously on music, he worked in door-to-door meat sales and regularly ranked among the company’s top salespeople.

Music, however, had been part of his life since childhood. He recalled receiving cassette players from his grandmother when he was very young and developing an early connection with recorded sound.

As he became older, music grew into more than entertainment. It became a therapeutic outlet that allowed him to express difficult emotions, personal experiences and truths that were not always easy to communicate in everyday conversations.

Bez also discussed a previous experience with a record label in Jacksonville. After facing negative situations within the music industry, he decided to leave the label and continue developing his music independently.

A Life-Changing Disability

One of the most emotional parts of the interview focused on the accident and medical complications that changed Bez’s life.

Bez explained that he fractured his C4 vertebra during a court transportation accident. He later developed a serious spinal infection that caused abscesses and ongoing neurological problems.

The condition affected his ability to walk, communicate, work and complete daily activities. He also continues to experience chronic pain that can make recording, producing, and promoting music extremely difficult.

Bez spoke honestly about the emotional impact of becoming disabled. He described the challenges of adjusting to a different body, dealing with communication barriers, and experiencing changes in the way other people treated or perceived him.

Johnnie J also shared parts of his own disability journey. Johnnie lost his eyesight after experiencing a severe reaction to medication as a child. Together, Johnnie and Bez discussed how society often responds to disability with fear, discomfort, misunderstanding, or lowered expectations.

Their conversation demonstrated the importance of disabled people telling their own stories instead of allowing others to define their abilities or limitations.

The Story Behind “Blood Ties”

Bez’s song “Blood Ties” was inspired by serious health problems, including liver failure, as well as complicated family relationships.

He explained that the song helped him address anger, disappointment and resentment connected to members of his family. Writing and recording the song became a way to release some of those emotions instead of continuing to carry them.

“Blood Ties” uses personal storytelling to explore the idea that being related to someone does not automatically create understanding, loyalty, or emotional support.

Bez also created an official music video for the song using his phone, showing independent artists that meaningful visual content can be produced without a major-label budget.

Music Production and Creative Independence

During the interview, Bez discussed the equipment and technology he uses to record his music. His production setup includes a Shure microphone, a Yamaha AG03 audio interface and Band Lab recording software.

His story demonstrates how affordable digital tools can make music production more accessible to independent and disabled creators.

Bez distributes his music through platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. Although he wants people to hear his work, he explained that he tries not to become overly focused on streaming numbers, statistics, or unrealistic expectations.

His goal is to create honest music that reflects his experiences.

Bez named several artists who have influenced his sound and storytelling, including Boosie, UGK, Lil Wayne, Caskey and Yelawolf. He particularly appreciates artists who use music to describe real-life struggles and personal experiences.

Disability Advocacy Becomes a Priority

Although music remains important to Bez, his priorities have changed since becoming disabled.

He now wants disability advocacy to become a major part of his work. He expressed interest in becoming a motivational speaker and visiting schools to speak with students, especially young people who are disabled, struggling emotionally or feeling overlooked by the educational system.

Bez believes his experiences could help others understand that becoming disabled does not mean a person’s purpose or value has ended.

His advice to people adjusting to a new disability was centered on acceptance. He encouraged listeners to acknowledge what has happened, release the victim mentality and begin building a life around their current abilities.

Acceptance does not mean pretending that pain or discrimination does not exist. It means refusing to allow those experiences to completely control the future.

Away Out Studio Productions

Bez also introduced Away Out Studio Productions, a creative project and independent label that he hopes will provide technical and artistic resources for disabled people.

The vision behind Away Out Studio Productions is closely connected to Bez’s own experience. He understands how difficult it can be for a disabled artist to access equipment, recording assistance, transportation, promotion, and supportive creative spaces.

By developing the organization, Bez hopes to help other disabled creators record music, learn technical skills, and share their work with a wider audience.

He is also working on an album inspired by Robert Greene’s book “The Laws of Human Nature.” One of the project’s first songs, “Toxic Impostor,” has already been released.
